With the start of the new year, Xiaomi has made a substantial bang in the world of technology. Earlier this week, they announced Redmi as their new sub-brand for catering to the budget segment while focusing on high-end features. A few hours ago, they announced the brand new Redmi Note 7, which carries the new branding for Redmi. While hogging the limelight with its 48-megapixel rear camera and a beautiful glass-design for the Note 7, Redmi is now off to another development that will change the market dynamics similar to the way its sister sub-brand Poco did last year. They are working on a true flagship smartphone.
By flagship, I mean a device that will adhere to Xiaomi's philosophy of innovative features for the masses. At the launch event of the Redmi Note 7 in China, Xiaomi's Lei Jun announced that the Note 7 isn't their flagship model. Redmi is, in fact, working on a flagship device that will sport a Snapdragon 855 chipset. Lei Jun didn't give out further details about the Snapdragon 855-powered Redmi smartphone, a media report suggests that this smartphone could be priced around $368 (approximately Rs 26,000).
Presently, the only Xiaomi device known to come with a Snapdragon 855 chipset will the 5G variant of the Mi Mix 3. The Mi Mix 3 sits on the higher end of the price spectrum competing with the likes of OnePlus 6T and other affordable flagships. Xiaomi came up with an affordable midrange smartphone sporting high-end internals in the form of the Poco F1. The Poco F1 was received very well across the markets Xiaomi operates in.
With Redmi coming up with a smartphone that offers a flagship Snapdragon chip, Xiaomi will offer two options to consumers for an affordable flagship device. The Redmi device could go for a universal and premium approach with its Snapdragon 855 flagship while the Poco F2 could cater to gaming enthusiasts with dedicated add-ons such as liquid cooling and fast charging.
To keep the prices lower, both of Xiaomi's affordable Snapdragon 855-powered smartphones could come with the slightly more affordable Snapdragon X24 modem instead of the X50 5G modem. In markets such as India where 5G won't be a major thing until 2020, these handsets could offer powerful smartphone experience without asking for huge prices.
