Yes, that's right, Redmi is now an "independent brand", a teaser poster from the company has confirmed. Xiaomi global teased the launch of a new Redmi phone with a 48MP rear camera on Jan 10 in China. Although the company didn't reveal the name of the phone what it did confirm is that the upcoming Redmi phone will be the first phone under the now independent Redmi brand.
The official teaser revealed that Redmi is now a "new independent brand". Which means, like Huawei - Honor and Oppo - Realme, Mi (Xiaomi) and Redmi will be referred to as two different brands unlike how it was so far. Xiaomi is yet to release an official statement regarding the separation of Redmi and Mi but the CEO of Xiaomi, Lei Jun has revealed the key idea behind the move while responding to a user on Weibo, Chinese microblogging site.
Explaining the idea behind the move Jun said that by separating Redmi from Mi the company is basically aiming to give more attention to both the brands. With the implementation of this move, Xiaomi is seemingly working on making Redmi a budget or "value-for-money" specific brand while under Mi brand Xiaomi will bring premium or high-end phones like Mi series, Mi Mix series and others. This means both Redmi and Mi will now have different focus areas.
Xiaomi now has three brands under the company including Redmi, Mi and Poco. Under the Mi brand, Xiaomi is expected to bring high-end or expensive phones, under Redmi brand the company could focus to bring budget-friendly phones like Redmi 6 or Redmi 5 series. And lastly, under the Poco brand, the company aims to offer phones with powerful specifications in an affordable price tag, Poco F1 for example. The Poco F1 comes with Snapdragon 845 chipset which mostly powers flagships like OnePlus 6T, Galaxy S9, S9+, Galaxy Note 9 and others. The Poco F1 is currently the cheapest and the only Snapdragon 845 chipset phone available under Rs 20,000.
Redmi 7 could be first phone under Redmi brand
Xiaomi has teased to launch a new Redmi phone in China on Jan 10. The company didn't reveal the name of the phone but rumours suggest that it could either be Redmi 7, Redmi 7 Pro or Redmi Pro 2. The teaser reveals that the upcoming Redmi phone will come with a 48MP camera -- which Xiaomi President announced last month. In the teaser, Xiaomi has confirmed that the alleged Redmi phone launching on Jan 10 will be the first device launching under the Redmi brand. As happens every time, under the Redmi 7 series Xiaomi is expected to bring three phones this year including the Redmi 7, Redmi 7A and Redmi 7 Pro.
